Lakeside Takes Oak Hills Tourney

Lakeside's boys soccer team is off to a fast start to the 2011-2012 season.

The Lancers won two games Saturday, the latter a 2-0 victory over Apple Valley Granite Hills to win the Hesperia Oak Hills tournament.

Cris Rodriguez and Cameron McDiarmid each scored a goal in the win, while Jesus Herrera and Gerino Duran assisted on scores. In goal, Jose Chavez picked up two saves in an encore performance to his six-save showing in the Lancers' penalty-kicks win over Victor Valley in the semifinals.

Herrera and Mateo Baltazar each scored and assisted on goals in a win that Lakeside (3-0-2) eventually pulled out on PKs, 4-2.

Better yet for the Lancers, they're undefeated despite beginning the season without All-Valley first-team selection Ricky Ruiz. The sophomore standout is academically ineligible until January, Lancers coach Colin Gilliland said.

"We're real pleased with our start because we haven't even had one of our best players," Gilliland said. "We're coming together nicely."
