D6 Girls Final Four Preview
The top four seeds in the division will make for interesting theater!
The top four seeds made it through to the semifinals of the D6 girls’ bracket, and the match-ups are quite intriguing. An undefeated defending champion in Desert Christian faces a St. Margaret’s squad that is quite familiar with the semifinals, but has not been able to push past the glass ceiling. The new kids on the block Malibu face who is arguably the most successful program in division history in five-time CIF Champions Ontario Christian. Here’s a preview of today’s matches.
#4 St. Margaret’s @ #1 Lancaster Desert Christian
The Knights have a sparkling 21-0-1 record as they have dismantled every opponent they have faced this season and are currently riding a 43 game winning streak. Led by Kristina Hulse, Hannah Parcel and Shea Richards, the Desert Christian senior class wants to finish this season the way they began their freshman year as CIF Champs. Rookie coach Jessica Wick, a member of the Knights’ 2007 CIF Champions, has had an incredible inaugural campaign. Wick comments, “We are very excited to finally play St. Margaret's. We have obviously heard about them over the years but have never been in the same brackets. We know that as the numbers dwindle, the games get harder and the teams tougher. We will be ready to play. I am very excited to play against a great coach where the wits of coaching will be more important now than ever. We are thrilled to be participants of the semifinal game, we will continue to play for the Lord and as always leave the outcome in His hands.”
St. Margaret’s are led by Katie Donahue who has scored 24 goals and GK Erika Page who has notched 19 shutouts this season. The Tartans coach, Johnny Marmelstein, is on the opposite end to his counterpart in years of experience. For the past 23 seasons, Marmelstein has amassed a 336-149-46 record and three CIF Championships at two different schools. Quipped Marmelstein, “I really don’t think anyone is afraid of my experience! But, Desert Christian would make anyone a little nervous. It’s a daunting task to face an undefeated team let alone a three-time defending champion at their field! We have heard about Desert Christian and how good they are at playing soccer, but their talent alone hasn’t got them to this place. They are a great team - they played hard for each other and you have to respect that. But, we are a great team too and we are going to bring it for however long the game will be. We are ready to play!”
The St. Margaret’s and Desert Christian girls’ soccer teams have never met in competition in their storied histories, and to meet in a match of this significance will be epic!
#2 Ontario Christian @ #3 Malibu
The Malibu-Ontario Christian match brings with it an intriguing collision of pedigree and footballing styles. The Sharks are new to the scene having warned the division last season of its’ future eminence by taking Desert Christian to pk’s (they were up 2-0 before falling 3-2) and, this season, by losing only one match to D5 Semifinalist Marymount. Malibu is a fast, physical team who like to play the ball behind a teams’ back four as quickly as possible. Led by Kristiana Konkol, Claire Haft and Caysie Beetly, this trio of stars for the Sharks have accounted for most of their offensive thrust. By all accounts, this team is a force to be reckoned with and they are ready to make their mark in D6. Coach John Johnstone of Malibu said, “Moving into the semifinal game against Ontario Christian, they are another strong team who have gone deep into the playoffs for many years previous, and we approach this game with due respect for the Knights and look forward to a good hard soccer game with the confidence an undefeated semi-finalist should.”
Ontario Christian is one of the oldest and most successful programs in the division and, their 25 victories are the highest total not only for the division but in all of CIF. The Knights like to knock the ball around and hold it until they find your weakness and then attack with a precise and organized passing game. Star forward Kaitlyn Mendoza has scored a whopping 62 goals and amassed 21 assists this season. Dave Belden, another old warhorse in the division, remarked, “We feel very fortunate to be in the position that we are in at this point. Although we have a strong history in girls soccer we never take for granted an opportunity to play at this high level. The top four teams do not get to this point in the season by accident. We are excited to play Malibu as it is a new opponent for us and we are looking forward to the challenge of playing a team that has obviously had an exceptional season. Our biggest concern of course is that we really have little knowledge of their program; their strengths and weaknesses, style of play, and of course who their top players are. We are looking forward to an exciting match and one that we anticipate being highly competitive.”
Both teams have produced about the same results as the Sharks have scored 114 goals and have only allowed 14 while Ontario Christian has division high 130 goals and have allowed 18. Something has to give in this match!

#2 Ontario Christian 1, Oxford Academy 0
Two of the top eight seeded teams fell in the second round as the CIF-SS Division 6 Girls’ Soccer Playoffs moved to the quarterfinal round! #8 San Dimas must feel cursed as they fell in the second round for the second consecutive year after being ranked in the top eight. This time, Calvary Murrieta toppled the visiting Saints 3-2 in double overtime. #10 Woodcrest Christian continues to impress as they defeated #7 Desert Hot Springs in what could be called a minor upset although the Big Sky League Champions have been playing very well as of late.
#1 Desert Christian had a very easy go of it with an 11-0 defeat of Arrowhead Christian. The Eagles seem to have not even hatched in this lopsided drubbing. #5 Santa Paula overcame the field conditions and a tough-minded Milken Community squad 3-1. #4 St. Margaret’s advances with a 3-0 win over Schurr HS. #3 Malibu survived the freezing conditions to overwhelm hosts Mammoth 3-0. #6 San Jacinto looks like they have recaptured their form with a tremendous 4-0 result against a well-coached Viewpoint team. Without a doubt, the scare of the tournament has to be the fact that #2 Ontario Christian barely survived their match with Academy League runner-up Oxford Academy by scoring the lone goal of the match in the last ten minutes of the match!
