Torrance, South Torrance girls soccer teams remain tied atop Pioneer League
Rivals play to a tie for second time after two goals by Tartars' Rodriguez, then two quick scores from visiting Spartans.
Torrance's Anika Rodriguez had the dazzling individual performance.
South Torrance banded together under adversity.
And little was settled in the chase for supremacy in the Pioneer League soccer race.
Rodriguez, the freshman sensation, scored two goals in the second half but South responded with goals three minutes apart for a 2-2 tie with Torrance Friday afternoon at Zamperini Stadium.
It was the second tie between the teams in league play, meaning Torrance (9-4-3, 4-0-2) and South (15-3-5, 4-0-2) could end up as co-champions of the league.
"I thought we we had them this time," Torrance coach John Martin said. "We got up on them and boy, it's just hard to account for heart. You can sort things out on the field, but (South) showed a lot of heart tonight.
"It was a heck of a battle, but we knew we were in for it right there. I was proud of the girls to hang on."
South's rally began about four minutes after Spartans coach Brad Gomez was shown a red card and had to peer at the game from the parking lot.
The Spartans gave him a reason to cheer.
Jessica Nakae's goal in the 67th minute off a free kick from Kalyn Kaemerle jump-started South, which tied the match three minutes later when Hayley Suart knocked in her shot off a cross from Amanda Whittle.
"We just kind of settled down again and started to play and they're obviously a very good opponent," Nakae said.
"But I think we need to turn it on from the very beginning. Whoever scores first, that changes the momentum of the game."
In injury time of regulation play, Torrance thought it might have a chance to steal a victory when Rodriguez went down while being chased in the penalty area, but the referee waved off any possible infraction.
"She should have gotten the call for a PK there and it would have been the difference in the game, but the referee didn't want to be the difference maker - which is right," Martin said. "You really need to let the girls sort it out who's going to win or lose. You hate winning games or losing games due to the officiating."
Gomez got his medicine after protesting too loudly less than a minute after Rodriguez, a freshman, squirmed her way through five defenders before burying a left-footed shot.
"I just wanted to score and I wanted to win, so that helps me push through," Rodriguez said. "It was kind of a letdown a little bit just knowing it was that easy to score so many goals."
That made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute and likely added to Gomez's frustration.
"Unfortunately, I said something I shouldn't have said and the referee had the right and I deserved to be thrown out," Gomez said. "I don't know if that was more motivation for the girls. I definitely missed the best part of the game."
In a physical game, both teams also got big saves from their goalkeepers. South's Paige Brandt parried a rocket from Rodriguez over the bar in the 34th minute, and Torrance's Ashley Flanigan denied Morgan Mullin late in the first half with a diving save.
Flanigan was also helped by the framework. Suart's angled shot bounced off the far post in the second half and right back to Flanigan, and Nakae hit the crossbar with a shot in overtime.
"Both teams knew what was on the line and they came out hard," Gomez said.
